It’s All-Opinions Day

They’re only opinions, but at least they’re all mine:

If I were the Angels, I’d be very worried about those rumors claiming the Rangers might end up with Houston’s Roy Oswalt later this month . . .

So tell me, how come Ron Artest’s psychiatrist didn’t have a spot next to him in the Lakers’ parade? . . .

Some day someone will explain to me why any opposing team throws strikes to San Diego’s Adrian Gonzalez. Considering the team’s limp lineup and the pitching friendly park he plays in, I’m not so sure the Padres’ first baseman isn’t the best player in the National League not named Albert Pujols . . .

Yawn! Oh, excuse me, I was just thinking about the upcoming NBA Draft . . .

Les Richter, who died recently, was written about more as an auto racing pioneer than a football player, which is too bad. This guy might have been the best linebacker in L.A. Rams’ history . . .

I still can’t get over Phil Jackson putting the whole season in Sasha Vujacic’s hands there at the free throw line in the final seconds of Game 7. And getting away with it. Amazing . . .

Darin Erstad, who has quietly retired from baseball, should be remembered for what he was: The greatest gamer in Angels’ history. Day in and day out, nobody played harder than he did . . .

The key to the second half of the Dodgers’ season? I think it is shortstop Rafael Furcal’s health . . .

Guess the Angels wouldn’t mind having Troy Glaus back at third base these days, huh? . . .

All you have to know about the World Cup is that the U.S. vs. Algeria turned out to be a big game . . .

Give me Tim Legler as an NBA analyst, and you can have all the rest of the ex-jocks attempting to make sense during the playoffs . . .

Here’s what I’d like to know: How would those thugs feel if they saw someone bashing in the windows of THEIR car after the Lakers’ clinching victory? . . .

Isn’t it time for the Angels to promote 18-year-old Mike Trout, their new No. 1 prospect who is merely leading the Midwest League in average (.370), hits, runs and steals at Cedar Rapids? . . .

Boston’s Rajon Rondo truly is one of the NBA’s most improved players. But please, don’t try to tell me he’s in the same class as Chris Paul. Not until he proves he can shoot . . .

The early summer workout reviews of USC frosh wide receiver Robert Woods include mostly raves, which comes as no surprise to anyone who saw him in high school . . .

Key stat for Colorado’s extraordinary Ubaldo Jimenez: He has allowed only 65 hits in 101-plus innings . . .

Those wondering about left-handed Darren Oliver should know he has a 1.44 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 7 walks for Texas. But then, the Angels really don’t need him in their shaky bullpen, do they? . . .

I make it 70-30 that Phil Jackson comes back for another year. I mean, really, why would anybody leave the kind of situation he has? . . .

  1. Les Richter definitely deserves mention. Not only was he an outstanding linebacker for the LA Rams, he was also the team’s place kicker for much of his career.

  2. Great read! If I may indulge myself and give a shout out to Phil Hughes who is leading the American League with 10 wins! He too is a Southern California product!

  3. Any possibility of a “Darin Erstad Day”? Aside from G.A. who deserves one more?
