It’s All-Opinions Day

They’re only opinions, but at least they’re all mine:

The Lakers can’t keep asking Pau Gasol to play 44 minutes a night and expect to win consistently. They’ve now lost three in a row for only the second time since the big guy from Spain arrived in L.A. . .

You mean to tell me Jerry Buss can’t afford a few extra thousand dollars for a 10-minute-a-night back up center until Andrew Bynum finally returns? Come on . . .

It would also help if Phil Jackson figured a way for someone besides Ron Artest to take those final shots . . .

If the Dodgers have money problems, you sure wouldn’t know it the way they keep signing players like Juan Uribe. This guy is an infielder with legit 20 to 25 home run ability, and those are hard to find . . .

It will be news now the next time Steelers’ linebacker James Harrison is NOT fined in a game . . .

Speaking of disciplinary action, how did Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan not get suspended after that ugly on-field brawl on Sunday? Only 25 grand apiece and no loss of playing time? Maybe Roger Goodell is going soft . . .

I thought the whole LeBron James-Eric Spoelstra bumping incident was overplayed. Seemed the superstar and the Miami coach barely brushed to me . . .

Colorado guarantees Troy Tulowitzki $157 million for 10 years, huh? Told you power hitting infielders don’t come along very often . . .

I just don’t see Jon Gruden winding up at the University of Miami. To go the college route, he would have to be offered by one of the top five schools in the country . . .

Stanford’s Andrew Luck won’t win the Heisman, but he does seem like a lock to be the No. 1 pick in the next NFL draft . . .

Speaking of No. 1 picks, the Rams’ Sam Bradford is looking more and more like the runaway Rookie of the Year . . .

If Atlanta earns the home field advantage for the playoffs, you have to like the Falcons’ chances of getting to the Super Bowl, considering quarterback Matt Ryan is 19-1 at home . . .

USC has opened up a 7-point favorite at UCLA on Saturday, but I don’t know many Trojan fans eager to give the points . . .

By the way, after his illegal ride in a student/agent’s golf cart, the rumor is Dillon Baxter, who has had a series of problems already, was a half hour late to a reconciliation meeting with Coach Lane Kiffin and AD Pat Haden. Maybe that’s why the Trojans’ young tailback didn’t play much against Notre Dame . . .

The key to UCLA becoming a more consistent basketball team is getting the ball into the hands of Tyler Honeycutt as much as possible. The stylish sophomore is easily their most polished player . . .

Steelers at Ravens and Jets at Patriots this weekend. Now we’re talking about getting into the meat of the NFL schedule . . .

Wait, Boise State loses on a missed field goal, its first defeat in 25 games, and it practically falls off the BCS charts? I don’t get it . . .

TCU in the Big East, huh? What’s next, UConn in the Pac-10? . . .

  1. Steve, you could not be more right about the Lakers needing a short term back up center so that Pau does not have to play 44 minutes. Maybe the Dodgers can afford to sign a left fielder to fill in the only question mark they have.

  2. Andrew Luck may not win the Heisman, but everybody would breathe easier if he did. I had my doubts about Sam Bradford because of his previous injuries but the Rams got it right this time. Has Andrew Bynum ever proved that HE is more than a back-up center? Agree with you on Boise State. I still believe that they could beat most of the teams in the Top 10. When is this BCS madness going to stop?
