It’s All-Opinions Day
They’re only opinions, but at least they’re all mine:
Gee, it’s the middle of August and Brett Favre is ready to return to the Vikings now. Never would have guessed it, would you? . . .
The only people more suprised than Zach Lee that the Dodgers forked over the $5.2 million to sign the No. 1 draft pick were Dodger fans who didn’t think the McCourts, or whoever is running the team, would OK it . . .
Whatever the Washington Nationals spent on No. 1 pick Bryce Harper, it’s a bargain. In a couple of years, the Nationals, with Harper and Stephen Strasburg, will have the two hottest gate attractions in baseball . . .
I didn’t see Mickey Mantle as a teenager, but Harper has the most raw power of any young prospect I’ve ever observed . . .
The Stafon Johnson dislocated ankle injury is more heartbreaking to those who have spent time around the former USC tailback and current Titans’ rookie. This is a really good kid with loads of talent who has had nothing but bad breaks . . .
Yes, the Angels actually do some things right. Or haven’t you checked John Lackey’s stats with the Red Sox lately? . . .
Those waiting for the San Diego Padres to fold down the stretch are apt to be disappointed. That pitching staff is just too good . . .
If Brian Westbrook has anything left, the San Francisco 49ers just moved up big time in the NFC West . . .
I love Zenyatta, but those claiming she is the best horse of all time are only embarrassing themselves. Come on, does anyone really think she could have beat Secretariat, let alone Seabiscuit, Citation, Affirmed, Swaps or any number of great thoroughbreds? . . .
What Zenyatta deserves, however, is to be rated the best horse of her generation. And certainly, she was the Horse of the Year in 2009, East Coast bias notwithstanding, and should be again this year, especially if she repeats in the Breeders’ Cup . . .
Nothing can put you to sleep faster than the final three quarters of NFL exhbition football . . .
You think pitching isn’t a tenuous occupation? OK, so how does the Giants’ Tim Lincecum go from double Cy Young award winner to looking like just another guy in one season? . . .
So far, from what I’ve seen, Tim Tebow appears to have a chance to start in the NFL some day. But only in a Michael Vick-like offense designed specifically for him . . .
In case you missed it, Darin Erstad is now a hitting coach at the University of Nebraska. The Angels, and their clubhouse, haven’t been the same since he left . . .
Let’s be honest. Nobody really cares whether Manny Ramirez comes back to the Dodgers now . . .
Tell me that’s not it for “Friday Night Lights.” If it is, it’s too bad. It’s the one sports-related show TV finally got right . . .
USC fans and boosters upset by the new tight security at football practice on Howard Jones and Brian Kennedy fields shouldn’t feel so frustrated. Word is, even Brian Kennedy can’t get in . . .
